Senate Rejects Republican Effort to Add Border Wall to Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal

The Senate on Wednesday rejected a Republican-backed effort to add funding to restart construction of the border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border in the $1 trillion infrastructure bill. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) was the only Democrat to vote in favor of the measure. The amendment failed in a 48-49 vote and required 60 votes in order to bypass a key legislative hurdle to be added to the infrastructure package. The amendment, introduced by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), would implement other border security measures to curb illegal immigration in the midst of a surge of people crossing the border in recent months. In July, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials encountered more than 200,000 illegal aliens along the border, according to the most recent figures released by the agency.
