Speaker Pelosi Speaks on Democratic Priorities in the House, Afghanistan

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday spoke about Democrats’ policy priorities following two huge party-line victories for Democrats in an emergency session of the House yesterday: the advancement of Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) $3.5 trillion budget resolution and the passage through the lower chamber of Rep. Terri Sewell’s (D-Ala.) ‘John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act,’ HR4, which Pelosi called “historic.” The House used a parliamentary procedure to pass a rule on Sanders’s budget proposal to pass it without any GOP votes. In a 220-212 party line vote, the House sent instructions to relevant committees to write legislation in accordance with the budget’s appropriations. Afterward, the House took up HR4.
